Educated at Epsom College and a graduate from Kingston University School of Law, Selvan trained as a solicitor at Chester. After qualifying in 1984 he spent several years working in London in industry with an international bank specialising in trade finance, credit and lending.

After re-locating to Gibraltar in 1990 Selvan worked as a consultant to our former practise managing litigation on a major liquidation that covered multiple jurisdictions including the United States, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom. During that time he was also retained by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission drafting banking legislation and investigating controlled activity. Since 2007 he has been manager of the Fiduciary Services Department at Baker Tilly Gibraltar, and in 2012 was promoted to director. Selvan is a member of STEP, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, holds a Diploma (awarded with distinction) in International Trust Management and a registered Commissioner for Oaths.

Selvan is a Governor of the Loreto Convent Junior School.
